In the year 2006, SIA recycled over 11,000 tons of steel, over 1,500 tons of cardboard and paper, and over 900 tons of wood. This is the natural equivalent of saving over 31,000 trees, 31,000 cubic feet of landfill space, over 700,000 gallons of oil, and over 10 million gallons of water.

The SIA is also unique in that it is home to a wildlife habitat. In 2003, the plant was designated as a backyard wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Foundation, and is home to a variety of animals from deer, geese and ducks to blue herons and Bald Eagles.

While the SIA is a prime example of Subaru’s efforts, the company is no stranger to taking initiative when it comes to keeping the environment clean. Subaru has received recognition from the Environmental Protection Agency for Gold Achievement in Industrial Recycling (2007), Climate Change (2008) and Community Involvement (2009). SIA has also blazed an impressionable trail from the start. In 1994 it was the first U.S. plant to become smoke free, and the plant has received EPA recognition for being a top achiever in the agency’s WasteWise program for reduced wasted and improved recycling.

In addition, Subaru also produces the most fuel efficient lineup of cars in America. The Legacy, Outback and Forrester have been certified as Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles (PZEV), which means they can have even lower fuel emissions than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
